In the three-dimensional virtual world of Second Life (SL), your customizable avatar can explore and be animated in many ways. The SL Folkdance Center offers contra dancing, waltzing, and Ukrainian polka almost all of the time, and events with a live host and caller include English Country dancing as well.
This is not really a substitute for first-life dancing. Sure, you hear some calling and great music from a variety of top bands. But your avatar is animated; you don't have to do anything, so you don't need to burn calories. You can, of course, dance in your own first-life space to the music and calling.
SL folk dancing has some advantages over the regular kind. You can dance even if you're not able to in your First Life. You can move your camera to see dance patterns from above. You always have a dance partner (though it may not be another person's avatar). You can admire the imagination and creativity in dancers’ appearances. Perhaps most important if you want to be social, you can actually text with people while dancing. You can read and participate in the informative and often-hilarious group chat. And you can converse and make friends with individual dancers from around the world. From them you can learn about other cool places to visit in this fascinating world.
And sometimes you dance to great mixes of modern popular songs that fit the format of traditional tunes.
